Seventy Years

He was promoted to professor in 1910. In 1909 he had been elected to succeed Charles Baker, '93, as secretary of the Alumni Association, and was laying plans for a vigorous campaign to secure funds for the athletic field. Of the various instructors in Mathematics during this period only two remained for more than a year. James A. Bullard, a graduate of Williams, came in 1908, and Raymond K. Morley, a graduate of Tufts and Clark, in 1910. After one year, Dr. Morley transferred to the University of Illinois, but was recalled by the Institute in 1912 to be assistant professor.

Joesph 0. Phelon was promoted to professor of Electrical Engineering in 1907. That year the staff was increased by the appointment of Dr. George R. Olshausen as assistant professor of Theoretical Electrical Engineering. A graduate of Washington University and Berlin, he had been a teacher of Physics at Cornell. He resigned in 1911 to become professor of Physics at Princeton, and was succeeded by Dr. Clarence A. Pierce, a graduate of Wesleyan and Cornell. Carl D. Knight was promoted to assistant professor in 1909. Raymond L. Witham, '08, previously a graduate of Bates and later of Purdue, became an instructor in this department in 1911.

In the Mechanical Engineering department, Carleton A. Read, a graduate of M. I. T., who had been professor at New Hampshire State College, succeeded George I. Rockwood as professor of Steam Engineering in 1908. Samuel E. Balcom succeeded Noah Ashworth as instructor in engines and boilers. In 1909, David L. Gallup was promoted to assistant professor of Gas Engineering. His work in the testing of automobiles was gaining national recognition, and the testing plant in the mechanical laboratories was visited and used by many automotive engineers. He was also carrying on pioneer research on the design of airplane propellers, utilizing the new current-meter rating station at Chaffins for tests. A new professor of Applied Mechanics, Edward L. Hancock, was added to the staff in 1909. A graduate of Wisconsin, he had had seven years' teaching experience at
