SIX veteran professors continued their service under Dr. Fuller's administration: George I. Alden, professor of Mechanics, George E. Gladwin, professor of Drawing, John E. Sinclair, professor of Mathematics and Civil Engineering, Alonzo S. Kimball, professor of Physics, Edward P. Smith, professor of Modern Languages, and Thomas E. N. Eaton, junior professor of Mathematics. Leonard P. Kinnicutt was a newcomer in the department of Chemistry. U. Waldo Cutler, after several years as instructor in languages, was promoted to assistant professor in June, 1883. Milton P. Higgins continued in the role of superintendent of the shops. All of these men loom large in the history of the college. Their idiosyncracies and the inspiration of their teaching are woven into its traditions.

The first notable addition to the staff after Dr. Fuller's accession was George H. White who, in November, 1883, was elected professor of Civil Engineering, relieving Professor Sinclair of the duties of that department. Mr. White had been assistant engineer for the Chicago, Milwaukee & St. Paul R. R. at Minneapolis prior to his appointment, and had been engaged in railway engineering since his graduation in 1876. He had the assistance of Mr. Otis until the spring of 1884, after which he was the sole member of the department.
