school on a self-supporting basis, and set $100,000 as the minimum amount to be sought. This amount was to provide for a building and equipment, working capital, and endowment. In April, 1891, it was announced that Col. E. J. Russell of Worcester had offered to undertake the raising of the $100,000. The first gift was $10,000, pledged by Stephen Salisbury. So far as official records disclose this was also the last gift. Mr. Bigelow continued to be optimistic for several months, however, and had some of the machinery shipped to the Institute. The rest of it was stored in a vacant building near his skating rink, a resort well known to Tech students. His trade-school plan eventually was abandoned.
