WPI Customized Classes Personal Cyber Awareness

Did you know that 35 million data records were compromised in corporate and government data breaches in 2008? (ITRC) Did you know that households with incomes higher than $70,000 were twice as likely to experience identity theft than those with salaries less than $50,000? ( according to the U.S. Department of Justice). Information Security will be presenting a program focusing on Personal Cyber Awareness. This presentation will provide information about keeping yourself safe and secure online, at home and on campus. This presentation will give you information on: Issues regarding your personal identifiable information, current issues like malware, phishing, and identity theft. We will also address issues regarding secure communication from home to the WPI network, how to recognize a social engineering scheme and who is available to help you on campus with these issues. About the speaker… Neil Spellman is a retired Senior Investigator from the Massachusetts Bureau of Special Investigations. He was a decorated Officer with the WPI Police Department prior to assuming his current role as a Network Security Analyst. He is a noted speaker on such topics as Identity Theft, Cyber Bullying, and Cyber crime. He has a BS in Criminal Justice and won the Networking Security Prize from the WPI Department of Management in 2005.
