Tasos Gavras received the 1st prize in engineering among the PhD participants at GRAD 2012: The Innovation Exchange. His presentation was "A Novel Methodology to Design Materials and Structural Components for Dynamic Performance" which was advised by Prof. Diana Lados.

Andrew Biro received the 3rd prize in GRAD 2012: the Innovation Exchange. His presentation was on "Friction Stir Welding in Aluminium and Magnesium Alloys: Effects of Processing Parameters on Microstructure and Mechanical Properties", advised by Prof. Diana Lados.

This year Andrew Biro received the Chester M. Inman award from the Worcester Chapter of ASM International. This scholarship is awarded annually to a regional student in the field of metallurgy or materials science. - Congressman McGovern visits iMdc
Massachusetts Congressman Jim McGovern visited WPI to meet with a group of undergraduate students advised by Professor Diana Lados and Professor Robert Norton. The students are redesigning a green, light, and high-performance helicopter engine. Mr. McGovern also visited the Washburn Laboratories, and the great educational and scientific value of the industry-university consortia at WPI were discussed.

- Brendan Chenelle Receives 2011 Sigma Xi Outstanding Master's Thesis
Award
Brendan Chenelle, whose thesis was advised by Prof. Lados titled "Friction Stir Welding in Wrought and Cast Aluminium Alloys: Microstructure, Residual, Stress, Fatigue, Crack Growth Mechanisms, and Novel Applications" was granted the 2011 Sigma Xi Outstanding Master's Thesis Award.
- Tasos Gavras Receives 2011 ASM Chet Inman Award
In memory of Chester M. Inman, who helped found the Worcester Chapter, this scholarship is presented annually by the Worcester Chapter of ASM International to a regional student in the field of metallurgy or materials science for excellence in research and significant contributions to ASM. The award this year was granted to Anastasios Gavras, Ph.D. Student in the Integrative Materials Design Center.

Early Career Faculty Fellow Award presented to Prof. Diana Lados by TMS on March 1, 2011 at the 140th TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition in San Diego, Carlifornia for her outstanding contributions to Metallurgy and Materials Science, and to WPI.
- Diana Lados to Participate in National Academy of Engineering's U.S. Frontiers of Engineering
Lados is One of Only 87 Young Engineers Nationwide Invited to Attend in Recognition of Her Exceptional Engineering Research and Technical Work. Diana Lados, assistant professor of mechanical engineering at Worcester Polytechnic Institute (WPI) and director of the university's Integrative Materials Design Center (iMdc), is among 87 young engineers selected to take part in the National Academy of Engineering's (NAE) 16th annual U.S. Frontiers of Engineering symposium. Chosen from more than 260 applicants, the participants, all engineers aged 30 to 45 working in industry, academia, and government, were nominated by fellow engineers or organizations and selected based on their exceptional engineering research and technical work. - Prof. Lados Receives Sigma Xi Outstanding Junior Faculty Researcher Award
Prof. Lados is the 2010 recipient of the Sigma Xi Outstanding Junior Faculty Researcher Award at WPI - Quote: "For Her Outstanding Contributions to Materials Performance and Process Selection Using a New Integrative Design Paradigm". The award was presented to her at the Sigma Xi Induction Ceremony luncheon held at WPI on April 8, 2010. Prof. Lados is a Full Member of Sigma Xi since 2004, and she also received the Sigma Xi Graduate Research Scientific Award - Best Ph.D. Thesis in Science and Engineering - in 2001.

Award
The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) granted Prof. Lados the most prestigious "Robert Lansing Hardy Award" for "exceptional promise of a successful career in Metallurgy and Materials Science" for her accomplishments and the significant contributions that iMdc brought to the field. The award was given to her at the February 2010 139th TMS Annual Meeting and Exhibition in Seattle. Prof. Lados was also granted the Ford Motor Company scholarship. With this award, Prof. Lados joins a most distinguished group of materials scientists and engineers granted this honor since 1956.

- Congratulations to Christopher James Lammi
Chris Lammi presented and passed his M.S. Thesis Defense on November 24, 2009. His thesis was entitled, "The Effects of Processing Residual Stresses on the Fatigue Crack Growth Behavior of Structural Materials". He will start his Ph.D. research in January at Georgia Institute of Technology.

- The Orr Early Career and "Best Paper" Awards
- Congratulations! Prof. Diana Lados is the recipient of the prestigious "Orr Early Career Award". This award is given by the Orr Family through the Materials Division of ASME to recognize early career research excellence in the areas of experimental, computational, and theoretical fatigue, fracture, and creep. The Award was conferred at the 2008 ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) held in Boston, MA on Tuesday, November 4, 2008. At this event, Prof. Lados also presented the Orr "Best Paper" Lecture entitled "Fatigue Crack Growth in Metallic Materials: Mechanisms and Design Considerations. More information
