The VOC at iMdc is equipped with two cutting edge, high-power optical microscopes for specimen preparation and analysis.
Specifications:
Nikon MM-400 Measuring
Microscope
The Nikon MM-400 Measuring Microscope is a "Tool Maker" microscope
with 10x-500x magnification for high-precision dimensional
measurement
and preparation of test
specimens as well as examination of fracture surfaces. The microscope
is equipped with a 2D 4"x4" translation stage, an
external digital position display (?0.0001"), and
PC-connectivity for image capturing and analysis.
Nikon Eclipse MA-200
Metallograph
The Nikon Eclipse MA-200 is a Metallographic Microscope with
50x-1000x magnification for detailed microstructural and fracture surface
analysis. The Eclipse MA-200 offers standard optical features such as
dark-field, bright-field, Nomarski filter, and polarized light while
featuring the latest LU optics and design from Nikon. Additional software
packages from Nikon allow quantitative analysis - automated grain size
measurement and area of
field calculations for percentage phase determinations.
Questar QM-100 Long Distance
Traveling Microscope
The Questar QM-100 Long Distance Traveling Microscope is an in-situ
crack
observation microscope which allows sub-micron resolution at working
distances up to 10 cm. Longer working distances up to 30 cm can be
accommodated for
larger depths of field or observation inside atmosphere or
temperature controlled chambers. The QM-100 allows 3D translational
movement and position display, as well as precision encoders for accurate
movement of the microscope. This enables repositioning and refocusing
during
fatigue crack propagation to capture
crack growth interactions with microstructural features of the
material.
