Heat Treatment Laboratory

iMdc has access to a fully-functional casting and heat treatment laboratory in MPI at WPI. These facilities allow casting and heat treatment of aluminum, magnesium, and other alloys with temperatures up to 1100C.

Specifications:

A variety of melt processing and casting equipment including electrical and induction melting furnaces, rotating impeller degassers, an AlScan unit for hydrogen measurement in the melt, a reduced pressure testing (RPT) unit, an ALU-Delta unit for prior to casting testing of grain refinement additions in aluminum and its alloys.
Heat treating furnaces including a fluidized bed and several bench-top furnaces set-up for application of various quenching media; sintering furnaces with both air and controlled atmospheres.
A spectrometer (SpectroMax) for measuring chemical compositions of aluminum and magnesium based alloys.
Data acquisition hardware and software using LabView.
Software: ProCast, MagmaSoft, Thermocalc, Fluent, Pandat, JMatPro, and other modeling software.
