Italy bore a large number of individual fencing masters, yet the Italian styles grew slowly compared to other nations. Italy contained some of the first formal writings on the subject of fencing, and is thouhght to have influenced most existing styles at the time.

Opera Nova

One of the earliest existing works, Opera Nova, was written in 1536 and emphasized thrusts and stabs over cutting power.

Camillo Agrippa

Mathematitian Camillo Agrippa began studying fencing, applying his geometrical knowledge to find new techniques. Some of his foresight also came from the study of movements used by chickens in fights.

Giacomo diGrassi

Writer of the treatise The Arte of Defense, diGrassi promoted the use of heavy footwork in addition to strikes and counterattacks.
