period of forty-four years, except for a half-year leave in 1933. Dr. Gleason H. MacCullough spent the year 1931-32 at the University of Michigan, where he earned a doctorate. Charles L. Wright, '30, spent the years 1931 to 1933 as instructor in Mechanical Engineering. A. Francis Townsend, '31, was a member of the department from 1931 to 1935, during a part of which time he was assistant to Professor Richey in the Business course. Ellis R. Spaulding, '32, returned after graduation to be instructor in Aeronautical Engineering. Louis W. Rawson, '93, retired as director of the Washburn Shops in 1933, retaining an assignment as consulting engineer. Burton L. Gray, instructor since 1910, and superintendent since 1928, succeeded him as director of the Shops.

The man chosen to succeed Harold B. Smith as head of the Electrical Engineering department in 1931, was Theodore H. Morgan, a graduate of Stanford University. Professor Morgan, who was thirty-nine, had had several years of teaching experience at his alma mater. That year, also, Clarence A. Pierce and Francis J. Adams were raised to full professors. William W. Locke, '30, became an instructor in the department in 1932, and succeeded H. A. Maxfield as superintendent of the dormitory the following year. Victor Siegfried, Stanford, '30, succeeded Leslie L. Robinson as instructor in 1933.

There were several changes in the department of Civil Engineering, beginning in 1932, when Prof. Arthur W. French took a year's leave of absence. Jerome W. Howe, who with his family had spent the previous year in Germany, became acting head of the department. When Professor French returned in 1933, he voluntarily relinquished this post to Professor Howe, but continued to teach a full schedule. Gunnar E. Hollstrom, Thayer School, '31, was instructor in this department from 1931 to 1933. In 1936-37, Prof. Carl F. Meyer spent a year at the University of Hawaii as exchange professor with Mr. Russell C. Brinker.

John M. Petrie, '29, became instructor in Chemistry in 1931. Harold S. Rice, '22, and Leslie B. Bragg each served a
