and Samuel S. Edmands, '99, director of Pratt Institute, and former
president of the Alumni Association. Harry R. Sinclair, '93, was
elected to complete Mr. Dingley's term. Mr. Davis, one of the pioneers
in electrical manufacturing, and known as the "father of radio
broadcasting," died September 10, 1931, at the age of sixty-three.
The years 1927 to 1929, madly rich and incredibly mad, were productive
ones for the Institute, though in retrospect not nearly so productive
as they should have been in the face of such vulgarity of national
wealth. The principal gains in endowment were in the form of
sustaining scholarships. Four of $10,000 each were received in the
year 1927-28: from William W. Brown, Worcester manufacturer; Henry
M. Dingley, '79; the Harrington brothers, Charles A., '95, and Frank
C., '98; and from Mrs. Ellen M. Paige, mother of Harry B. Paige,
'98. Also provided was an annual gift from the Class of 1885 to
provide a scholarship, which the class endowed in 1934. A $10,000 gift
to the 1920 Endowment from George F. Fuller was also transferred to
the scholarship account.
In 1927, Mrs. Caroline S. Washburn endowed the Charles Grenfill
Washburn memorial scholarship. The additional $5,000 for the Henry
W. Miller scholarship was received from the estate of Mrs. Ruth
A. Hoar that year, as promised in the will of her sister many years
before. A $10,000 loan fund was also established in 1927 by the will
of George E. Duffy, woolen manufacturer of Worcester. By the
advantageous sale of securities in which the Alzirus Brown fund of
1913 was invested the principal of that fund was increased $67,500 to
$140,700.
Only a few other special additions to endowment were made between 1927
and 1931. One was a bequest from Ray L. Stinchfield, '08, who died in
1928, amounting to about $13,000. The other was a fund of nearly
$27,000 for the department of Modern Languages, the residuary bequest
of Mrs. Margaret Harlow, of Worcester, daughter of William
T. Harlow. A bequest of $10,000 was received from the estate of
Mrs. Addle L. French,
