of every sort of flimsy excuse that boys could devise, and the excuse book became a tradition. In 1891 Professor Alden proposed a single weekly period of instruction in Christian ethics, as a substitute for daily chapel. The following year, on recommendation of the trustees, chapel was placed on a voluntary basis. The Corporation studied and passed upon all faculty proposals for changes in courses and dealt with major problems of student discipline, but the matters that claimed most of their attention were finance and expansion of the plant.
