Introduction

National fellowships, scholarships and grants are selective awards that provide financial and professional support toward a variety of ends. Fellowships are available for research, graduate school, internships, international study, or completion of your undergraduate education. They may be undertaken in the United States or abroad, and they may be for a summer, an academic year, or longer. Some fellowships support non-academic activities.

Research and reflection will help you to identify your interests and then to locate fellowships or scholarships designed to support them. Each funding source has its own style and purpose. The more concrete you are about the experience you want through a fellowship, the easier your search for the right fellowship will be.  A good place to begin is Things to Consider Before Applying for Fellowships.

Winning a major fellowship is a great honor that can open many other doors to new colleagues, institutions, and experiences. Whatever your personal and professional goals, fellowships are worth the time and effort required for their pursuit. Whether or not you receive an award, you will emerge from the fellowship application process with a stronger sense of who you are, and a clearer vision of what you want to do.
