Is my Outlook mail seure on my laptop or home desktop?
If you cache your email and do not encrypt your user directory, then all the information in your emails can be obtained from someone who has your machine in their possession or has access to your machine.
- Caching means information resides on your local machine. If you work offline, whether by choice r due to a connection problem, your data is still available to you instantly wherever you are. Microsoft describes some advantages and disadvantages of caching at their Setting up Outlook 2003 Cached Exchange Mode Accounts article.
- To turn Cached Exchange mode off:
- On the Tools menu, click Account Settings.
- On the E-mail tab, click the Exchange account, and then click Change.
- Under Microsoft Exchange Server, clear the Use Cached Exchange Mode check box.
- Click Next, then Finish.
- Exit Outlook by selecting File then Exit.
- To encrypt the user directory, contact the WPI Helpdesk or call (508) 831-5888. Encrypting the directory may result in minor decreases in response time. When the direcyory is encrypted, the data can only be accessible when logged into the PC with the same user account that encrypted the data. The Helpdesk cannot recover the data unless the PC was a member of the WPI ADMIN domain in which case the domain security administrator may be able to recover the data. For more details about the advantages and disadvantages of encrypting the user directory, Contact the WPI Helpdesk or call (508) 831-5888.
