Please note that due to the widely varying nature of Android
devices, we cannot fully support wireless under Android. The
directions offered here are provided on an AS-IS basis. These
directions are based on Android 2.3.6 as installed on a Motorola Droid
4 subscribed to Verizon Wireless 4G LTE. Other hardware, Android, and
provider versions may differ significantly.
Requirements
Date and time set correctly on the Android device
Either one of:
Your Android device must already have another Internet
connection, such as 3G, 4G, or home wireless, or
You can use a computer already on the Internet with a USB port and
cable to connect to your Android device
NOTE - Your wireless card needs to be registered through WPI
Network Registration (http://netreg.wpi.edu/) prior to
working on the WPI Wireless Network.
Setup of WPI Wireless Network
Make sure your device's clock is set to the correct date
and time.
Wait 30 minutes for your registration to become active.
Find and open the Location & security settings menu on
your Android device. This is usually found from the Home
screen by pressing the menu key or icon and selecting
Settings, followed by Location & security.
In the Credential storage section, make sure Use
secure credentials is checked.
If this is the first time you have enabled secure
credentials, you will be prompted to enter a new personal
password which will be used to encrypt the wireless
certificates on your device.
If you have used secure credentials previously, you will
be prompted to enter your existing credential storage
password. If you ever reboot or power off your device, you
will need to come back here and reenable Use secure
credentials and re-enter this password for WPI Wireless to
work.
Depending on your device's capabilities, you may choose one of two
methods to install the wireless certificates. If your device has some
other form of connectivity that you can use, such as a 3G connection
or you use wireless at home, you may use the Direct Download directions.
If, on the other hand, you do not have any other convenient form of
connectivity, you may instead download the certificates using a PC and USB cable connected to your
Android device.
From the Android 2.x and newer section, click on
the link to download the Network Operations CA Certificate
File. Your Android device will prompt you to import it.
If prompted to name the certificate, enter the name "WPI
NetOps CA 12-13" (use the current academic year). If
there is more than one CA, repeat the import process for each
one.
Next, click on the link to download the Wireless User
Certificate File. When prompted, enter the "Wireless
User Certificate Password" (found near the top of the
secure download page) to extract the certificate. When
prompted, name it "WPI Wireless User 12-13" (use the
current academic year).
From the Android 2.x and newer section, download
the Wireless User Certificate File and Network
Operations CA Certificate File files and make a note of
the Wireless User Certificate Password at the top of
the page which is needed to unlock the certificate file.
Plug your Android device's USB cable into your PC or
Mac.
On your Android device, make sure you select the option to
mount the USB device to access the files via your PC or
Mac.
On your PC or Mac, open the window to access the files on
your Android device and copy the two files you downloaded
above to the Android device.
On your Android device, open your file manager app and
browse to the location where you copied the two certificate
files. If you don't have a file manager, you can get the free
OI File Manager app from the Google Play Store.
Select the netops-ca file from the file browser. Your Android device will
prompt you to import it. If prompted to name the certificate,
enter the name WPI NetOps CA 12-13 (use the current
academic year). If there is more than one CA, repeat the
import process for each one.
Select the Wireless User 12-13 file (or the
current academic year) from the file browser. When prompted,
enter the Wireless User Certificate Password (found
near the top of the secure download page) to extract the
certificate. When prompted, name it WPI Wireless User
12-13 (use the current academic year).
Find and open the Wireless & networks menu on your
device. This is usually found from the Home screen by
pressing the menu key or icon and selecting Settings,
followed by Wireless & networks.
Check the Wi-Fi box to turn on Wi-Fi.
Select the Wi-Fi settings item and look under the Wi-Fi
networks list. After a few seconds, you should see
WPI-Wireless ("Secured with 802.1x EAP").
Touch WPI-Wireless to open a settings window, and enter the following settings:
EAP method: TLS
Phase 2 authentication: None
CA Certificate: select the newest WPI NetOps CA
User Certificate: select WPI Wireless User for the current academic year.
Identity: type your email address here emailaddress@wpi.edu
Anonymous Identity: Leave blank
Wireless Password: Leave blank
Click Save or Connect or OK.
It may take up to a minute to connect. You should see the
wifi icon appear in your notification bar once you are
connected, and the Wi-Fi checkbox in the wireless & network
settings menu will say Connected to WPI-Wireless as well.
You may need to turn Wi-fi off and then on again if you are
unable to connect the first time.
If you still have trouble connecting, try turning
Wi-Fi off, then turning Use secure credentials
off and then on again, followed by turining Wi-Fi back
on again.
